Lauren’s 40 over 40 Portrait Experience

Meet Lauren, passionate, purposeful, and full of life! Her 40 Over 40 portrait experience was a celebration of energy, and saying ‘yes’ to what truly matters. As part of my 40 Over 40 portrait photography campaign in Johannesburg, Lauren embraced the opportunity to pause, reflect, and honour the journey that has shaped her into the woman she is today; vibrant, wise, and unapologetically herself.

What drew you to this 40 over 40 campaign?

The power of age seems to have always been both yearned for and dreaded. To celebrate women who are moving into this age is liberating, to be part of the narrative of self-assuredness and personal reflection is empowering. The yearning of wisdom and grace comes with the lines we have earned.

If you could go back and tell your 20 year old self something that you think would change your life, what would it be?

Put aside the inner voices that keep you doubting yourself. They don’t serve you even though they were designed to keep you safe. Find yourself sooner, it will be worth it.

What are you post proud of yourself for?

I have always enjoyed being involved in sports but when I took up outdoor rock climbing on an invitation from a client, now friend, I found a community and lifestyle that matched and challenged my sense of self. New adventures are what fuel my love for everything life offers. Extending myself by saying yes is really only fully possibly because I have learned to also say no.

What are some goals or things you still want to do?

I would like to own a lock-up-and-go place in Langebaan and spend time kite surfing and enjoying the outdoors.

I started my own remedial school in 2013 when one of my daughters was continually failed by the education and medical systems. I wanted a place she could grow and learn holistically, that was healing rather than closed off and dismissive. I rejected the standard model in favour of an approach that honoured the child first. We continue today, providing children with a place to find themselves and build the strength of character they need to be able to overcome their challenges.

“If you’re not prepared to look at my strengths, don’t touch my weaknesses” – Prof. Reuven Feuerstein

Thoughts on aging?

I love it. I didn’t think I would but I do.

What do you think some of your best qualities are?

Not giving up on people, especially children, even in the face of seemingly awful behaviour. Giving someone grace and then showing them how to get up again and claim their life.

What advice do you have for other women 40+ out there?

Learn how to say no, so that when you say ‘yes’ you can mean it fully.

What has gotten easier for you since turning 40?

Saying no.

What do you currently love about yourself?

My energy and passion.
